Perge , Aspendos , Antalya
|
DAY 13: WEDNESDAY 3/5/2000
This morning we visited Perge which is 15 km. east
of Antalya and has the oldest Hellenistic buildings that we have
seen. |
 |
 |
It was settled by the greeks after the trojan
war and prospered under Alexander the great and the Romans. Perge is
famous for its huge Roman and Hellenistic Gates and the collonaded street. |
| Beside the collonade are channels through which
water cascaded , this must have been extremely impressive. |
 |
 |
There are wall niches which are now empty ,
the statues which they held were seen by us in the museum yesterday. Our next
stop was Aspendos where everybody was most impressed by the theater. We were
serenaded by Carmel, a member of our group, her performance demonstrated
the effectiveness of the acoustics of this fine
theater. |
| In the afternoon our group had a very special
experience. Our guide took us to Karain Cave which is set in a steep
rockface 150 m. above a fertile valley. this cavern was continuosly
occupied for 25.000 years. |
 |
 |
Archeological evidence in the museum reveals
pleistocene animal bones and teeth found in the cave. It was first
excavated in 1946 and digging continues today. This excursion was a
highlight of our Turkey tour. |
