DAY 14: THURSDAY 4/5/2000
Set off early in the day to explore the Turquoise
Coast of Turkey which our guide explained was a wedding
present to Cleopatra, from the groom, Mark Anthony. We drove beside
mountains along side sand and pebble beaches. |

 |
Through citrus orcheads and rows of plastic roofed green houses where
tomatoes, beans and cucumbers are grown. Our destination was Myra
which is inland from Demre and is famous for its tombs which are cut out
of the rock and are made to resemble Lycian Houses. These tombs date back
to the 5th BC. |
| Our next stop was at the church of St Nicholas in
Demre, a place visited by St. Paul on his way to Rome. St. Nicholas was
the bishop of Demre in the 4th century and became the patron saint of
virgins, children ,sailers and Russia. |

 |
Today he is best known as Santa Claus by the
western world. In the afternoon we went out on a boat tour to view the
Hellenic city which was partly submerged under the sea by an earthquake in
the 6th century BC. |
| The highlight was a stop in a cave for swimming and
enjoying the sun shine on deck while admiring the crystal blue waters
of the mediterranean. |
