Cappadocia, Taurus mountains, Iconium, Whirling Dervishes


DAY 16: SATURDAY 6/5/2000

Early start today as we are travelling to Cappadocia through theTaurus mountains. Extremely rocky slopes , pine trees growing beside the road, terraced fields, and small hamlets.

whirling derwish museum konya Some mountains' peaks have pockets of snow as we have reached an altitude of 1,800 metres. First stop at Konya which is a devoutly muslim city. Konya is the heart of Turkey's very rich " bread basket " as the surrounding steppe produces abundant grain crops. whirling derwish museum konya
Visited the mevlana museum which was once the lodge of the whirling dervishes. The Lodge has a magnifecent fluted dome of Turquoise tiles. After leaving Konya we drove along the route of the famous silk Road and a caravansarei. Sultan hani we visited a caravasarei built in 1229, they were built about 15 to 30 kms. apart which measured a day's camel ride and are monumental stone buildings. Travelled a distance of about 300 km's today. whirling derwish museum
