Kappadokia, Capadocia , Lodge,

DAY 17: SUNDAY 7/5/2000

Time to start exploring the region of Cappadocia, which was once of the Hittite area. This is Turkey's one of most visited tourist areas. It is today an important agricultural region with fruit orcheads and vine yards.

It was the eruption of three volcanoes which created geographical features which have made the area famous . The result is a landscape of colombs with a boulder purched on top. These are called " fairy chimneys " and entire valleys are formed with these formations.
Today we toured the area and amazed at the expansion of these chimneys. Explored two significant areas . One overlooking the Goreme valley and the other called the Pegion's valley. We visited a house which was dug into the hillside showing how people have made use of geology of this area. Two highlights today were a visit to a pottery shop, where we learnt how the ceramics, for which the area is famous , are made and a visit to an Onyx and jewelry  centre where we learnt how onyx is carved and polished.
