DAY 6: WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26 2000

Enjoyed our stay in Assos, the place where St Luke wrote his Gospel. Great view of Lesbos the Greek Island. Learnt that Turkey is the fifth largest Olive producer in the world as we drove through many kilometers of Olive groves.

Local Man, Bergama,
Trojan Temple, Pergamon  Headed for Pergamon now called Bergama. The new town of Bergama is spread out on the plain and above on a high hill is the ancient city of Pergamon. Here was the famous library which housed 200.000 volumes second only to Alexandria in Egypt and the steepest theater in the world which seated 10.000 people.
The estimated population of Pergamon at its peak was 80.000 people. Next we visited the Asklepion which is was medical center of the ancient world. It had a great reputation for curing people and diagnosis was often by interpretating dreams. These arches supported the base of the temple, and later on they were used as the cisterns.
The Odeon of the Asklepion

Galen an early physician, who discovered the circulatory system around mid 2nd century, worked there. Much of the healing was a psychological nature.

We then left Pergamon and headed for our over night stop at Kusadasi- a drive of 3 hours through beautiful orchards and towns. Pillars from the Asklepion
