Ephesus

DAY 7: THURSDAY 27/4/2000
Late start this morning off to visit Ephesus the
Roman capital of Asia Minor, population of 250,000. Centre for trade with
a busy port. Visited by St. Paul and alleged to be the home of St. John
and the Virgin Mary. |

It took 2 hours to walk 1.5 km's and quite
hot. Saw the Odeon, theatre, Fountain of Trojan, followed the curettes
way, passed terrace houses and shops, Temple of Hadrian and what fun, The
Roman toilets. The most impressive was the library which
held 12,000 scrolls in niches around the walls. This has been
reconstucted so that it is earthquake resistant. |
| Along the marble way which has ruts made by
wheeled vehicles. Then to the great theater with seating for 25.000
people. |

Next to Selcuk to Meryemana, fantastic views of
Ephesus from the bus as we climbed the hill. Visited the church over the
site claimed to be the home where Virgin Mary lived with St. John. |
| This site was discovered as a result of visions
in the 19th century seen by a German nun Catherine Emmerich. |

The day finished with a visit to the museum in Selcuk.
The most famous exhibits being Eros and the Dolphin, God Bes-the
phallic symbol of Ephesus and Artemis the fertility goddess. |
