Miletus, Priene, Didyma
|
DAY 8: FRIDAY 28/4/2000
A beautiful sunny day for our first stop at PRIENE which in 300 BC. was
an important place. A long climb up the hill to the site, but well
worthwhile. |
 |
 |
Priene was a planned town with its streets laid
out in a grid system, the first city to do so. |
| The two spectaculars features are
the five standing Ionic columns of the Temple of Athena and the theatre
with finely carved front seats for VIP's. |
 |
 |
We also saw the ruins of a Byzantine Church and
then came the long walk down again. A drive of 22 km's south to Miletus ,
this was an important commercial center about 700 BC. to 700 AD. |
| After that time the harbour filled with silt and
commerce stopped. The 15.000 seat theater was originally a Hellenistic
building but it was reconstructed in 1st century AD. by the Romans. It is
also famous for the Baths of Faustina, constructed for the wife
of Emperor Marcus Arelious. |
 |
 |
Last we visited Didyma, the site of the Temple to
Apollo occupied by the Oracle and the priests who interpreted for the
people. |
| The Temple was never finished but at one time
there were 120 high columns. The most stiking is the head of Medussa who
has snakes for hair. |
